Nice to meet you!
I'm Maribeth. Welcome!
Every life is a story, isn’t it?
I have been writing stories since kindergarten and began writing for kids over 19 years ago when my own children were small. Lots of picture books and three children later, I enjoy not only the process of story writing but also meeting kids and adults who like to write.
There is no bigger thrill than talking with a breathless 10-year-old who tells me, “I want to be an author when I grow up!” That excited look in their eye reminds me that doing what you love to do, and leaning into how you are uniquely wired, is what makes work interesting, fun and rewarding.
Read on to learn more about me, my work and much more. I wish you all the best as you do your own writing, reading and creating!
I LOVE MY FAMILY!
We have three grown kids: Adam, who is married to Janelle — they have a little guy named Leo and a daughter named Della; Hanna, who is married to Noah — they have a toddler named, Abe; and our youngest is Will — recently graduated from college. My husband Darwin is a retired firefighter and my very best editor.
I LOVE MY GRANDKIDS!
Most of my stories originated from raising children, and now, through playing an active role in the lives of our little grandchildren. As a long-time volunteer with children and teens, I’ve never ceased to be amazed by the deep, perceptive and optimistic way they interpret the world. Kids, as always, inspire me!
I LOVE NATURE!
My husband, oldest son and I are beekeepers. It’s a hobby that is both challenging and rewarding at the same time. The stings aren’t fun, but the honey is a miracle and the work that honeybees do in pollinating is absolutely essential.
I LOVE BOOKS!
Does that surprise you? I grew up in the library and reading was a priority at home—it was with our own kids, too! Give me a good book from either the library or an independent book store, some nature and little children—well, my heart just might explode from happiness.
What folks are saying
“Maribeth Boelts was worth her weight in gold. She was articulate, knowledgeable and highly motivating. Students chose to write at home, all on their own, simply because they were inspired by Maribeth’s story.”
Kathy Tritz-Rhodes, elementary principal
“As a teacher librarian, I have been able to refer to Maribeth’s talks as I work with the students, ‘This reminds me of what Maribeth shared with us!’ The students made an instant connection. She impressed us all with how easily she could relate to the preschoolers through fifth graders, keeping their attention and interest. Maribeth is a fun author to host! Your school community will be talking about her visit long after she’s gone home.”Deb Moyer, teacher
“We were privileged to have hosted Maribeth Boelts as a speaker for our students. Our school had adopted the book, “Those Shoes” as part of our Caring Character Pillar and included it in our surrounding activities. Mrs. Boelts was able to bring it to life for our students! She related to students easily, made personal connections, included hands on pieces, discussed her writing process in a way that was understandable for even the youngest of our students and wove us into her life with her storytelling abilities. She is truly a dynamic speaker and storyteller!”Baninder Mahabir, principal
“Maribeth is such a genuine, caring person that we instantly made a connection when we met. Her activities are age-appropriate and she does a fantastic job of keeping the students engaged. Maribeth incorporates both reading and writing into her presentations. Her books are not only entertaining but deliver important messages as well. Not only did the students enjoy their time with Maribeth but the teachers all commented on how much they enjoyed the sessions also. Therefore, I would strongly recommend inviting Maribeth Boelts to share her stories with your school!”Genni Paul-Fetterman, Title One/Reading Recovery Teacher
